Lewisburg General Dentistry

Lewisburg Dental Care That Fits Your Lifestyle

Our Lewisburg general dentists can offer comprehensive care to patients from all across Central Pennsylvania. There’s rarely a need for you to have to travel to a specialist. We can provide you with everything you need from dental hygiene to periodontal therapy in the comfort of our conveniently located, state-of-the-art office.

Comprehensive Exams

One of the best ways to stay on top of what’s going on inside your mouth is to monitor it for any changes as time goes by. We do this by creating a baseline at your very first new patient exam. Then, your Lewisburg general dentist can evaluate how we’re improving your smile or detect where a new issue might be forming. Our comprehensive exams are an annual assessment of your oral health and usually include:

  • Full Mouth X-Rays – They allow us more precision and to see what’s going on beneath your gum line.
  • Full Periodontal Evaluation – Your gums play a bigger role in your oral (and even overall) health than you might think. We monitor them for signs of disease.
  • Full Restorative Evaluation of Current Fillings – We’ll take a look at your fillings to ensure they’re in good shape and free from damage.
  • Hard and Soft Tissue Disease Exam – Just like the name suggests, we’re on the lookout for anything suspicious in your hard and soft tissue.
  • Oral Cancer Screening – This is important because the earlier we detect oral cancer, the better your chances of beating it. We do both intraoral and extraoral screenings.
  • Digital Photos – We’ll also photograph your teeth from the inside and outside to give us a better idea of the state of your oral health.
  • Orthodontic Evaluation – If necessary, we’ll also take a look at your bite and teeth alignment.

Oral Cancer Screenings

Oral cancer isn’t a disease that you commonly hear about, but over 45,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral or pharyngeal cancer this year. The thing about oral cancer is that it has to be detected early to have a good chance of being completely cured.

We regularly conduct visual and manual oral cancer screenings to check for any signs of abnormalities. Our doctors also use high-tech VELscope® technology, where a safe blue light shines into your mouth to cause your oral tissue to glow. It helps us see issues that aren’t easily detectable to the naked eye.

If you detect any of the following signs or symptoms in your mouth, on your gums, tongue, or lips, please contact us for an exam.

Oral Cancer Symptoms:

  • White or velvety red patches that will not rub off or heal
  • Sores or swelling that last longer than 2-3 weeks
  • Repeated bleeding with no apparent cause
  • Numbness or pain in any area
  • Difficulty in chewing, swallowing, or moving your tongue or jaw.
  • A mouth sore that bleeds easily, or fails to heal

Regular oral cancer screenings are another important reason why it’s essential to regularly see your Lewisburg general dentist. It might just save your life.

X-rays

As you get to know your new Lewisburg general dentist, you’re going to learn that we have a unique, nerd-like love for all things dental technology. (Can you blame us? Things keep changing in amazing ways.) That’s why Union Dental Health is dedicated to providing high-tech dentistry with advanced technology for a more accurate, precise diagnosis. These innovative tools protect your health and help us find problems before becoming more difficult and costly to treat.

Digital X-Rays – These state-of-the-art images are a benefit to both our patients and our team members. Most importantly, digital x-rays significantly decrease the exposure time to radiation. With a digital x-ray, we take a picture of your teeth and immediately see it on a computer monitor. This large, color-enhanced image lets us get a better view of your oral health, allowing for earlier treatment. This process is also better for the environment as it doesn’t use photo chemicals and traditional film, thus eliminating waste.

Panoramic X-Rays – This type of digital imaging is collected a bit differently from traditional x-ray because nothing goes in your mouth. The machine moves around your head in a half-circular motion while capturing images of your entire mouth from root to crown.

Dental Hygiene

More than cleanings, dental hygiene visits with our skillful team allow them to thoroughly examine your mouth and stop any problems in their tracks. During your dental hygiene appointment, we’ll:

  • Clean your teeth
  • Take digital x-rays
  • Look for any oral health issues
  • Screen your mouth for oral cancer
  • Measure your gums for periodontal disease

Thanks to our advanced technology, your dental hygiene cleanings at Union Dental Health will be amazingly comfortable and more complete than ever. We rely on sonic scalers to remove debris from your teeth, such as plaque and tartar buildup. These state-of-the-art instruments use oscillating sound waves to gently vibrate the unwanted debris away from your teeth, removing it both above and below the gum line. These ultrasonic units are so gentle they can even be used to administer deep cleanings and gum therapy. Many first-time hygiene patients tell us their teeth feel cleaner than ever before.

Are you due for a dental hygiene cleaning? Call our Lewisburg dental office today and get scheduled for a visit and the best, most enjoyable cleaning you’ve ever had at the dentist. Our hygiene team features some of Susquehanna Valley’s most talented dental hygienists. Ask them anything about smile care. They know it all!

Periodontal Therapy

Periodontal or gum disease is tricky. You might have it, and not even know it. So, how are you supposed to fix it? Regular visits to your Lewisburg general dentist is a good place to start. Do you experience any of these common symptoms?

  • Bleeding when brushing or flossing
  • Puffiness or tenderness of the gums
  • Halitosis (bad breath)
  • Loose-feeling teeth

Diagnosis

During your regular dental hygiene exam, our dental hygienists will measure the gum tissue around each tooth to assess any periodontal deterioration. Digital x-rays may also be taken to reveal any bone loss around your teeth. If periodontal disease is diagnosed, a variety of treatments are available to treat the disease, and even reverse it.

Treatment

A variety of new technologies make the treatment of this disease more thorough and comfortable than ever before. High-tech soft tissue lasers can gently remove any damaged or diseased gum tissue and kill any bacteria below the gum line.

Ultrasonic scalers use pulses of water to comfortably remove any bacteria or calculus under the gum line and around the tooth root. Antibiotic treatment kills bacteria over time. Powerful antibiotics, like ARESTIN, were created just for periodontal bacteria and can be placed under the gum line to fight periodontal disease long after you leave the office.

The good news is that periodontal disease is treatable, even at an advanced stage, to help you keep your natural teeth and improve your health.

Fluoride Treatments

Make no mistake; your Lewisburg general dentist will tell you fluoride treatments are essential for keeping teeth healthy and strong. Every day your teeth lose some of their protective minerals, especially when we consume acidic foods or drinks. Your enamel pays the price and ends up weakened and damaged as a result.

When your Lewisburg general dentist recommends fluoride treatments (we say kids at every visit and adult as needed), there’s a good reason behind it. Fluoride’s remineralizing effects are genuinely beneficial for your smile.

Fluoride treatment has its benefits:

  1. It helps your teeth with the reabsorption of calcium and phosphate, which strengthens your tooth enamel.
  2. It can slow or reverse how cavities grow by battling the bacteria that cause decay.
  3. It joins to developing teeth to strengthen and protect them from cavities.
  4. It prevents you from needing more costly dental work.
  5. It reduces the amount of time you have to spend at the dentist.
  6. It helps prevent gum disease.
  7. It can prolong the life of baby teeth.

We believe that fluoride works well to strengthen both children’s and adult’s teeth, the same idea recommended by the American Dental Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Medical Association. Fluoride treatments can be completed during our regular visits with us. They’re pain-free and take only a few minutes to complete.

Mouthguards

Did you know that mouthguards can protect against concussions? With everything that’s been in the news recently about how damaging concussions can be for athletes, it’s important to have protection when you’re an adult or child athlete who’s active in many sports. Our mouthguards are a step above the traditional boil-and-bite options you’ll find online or at the sporting goods store. They are constructed of more durable material that your dentist can custom mold to help protect your teeth and soft tissues from injury. Trust us we say our mouthguards are much more comfortable and easier to wear compared to other brands.

We can also create special nightguards in-office. We generally recommend a nightguard for someone who is struggling with bruxism or teeth grinding. We’ve found our nightguards to be effective at protecting your teeth from grinding and clenching, while also preserving your beautiful smile and costly restorations from unwanted damage. Nightguards are also sometimes used to help end jaw pain associated with TMJ disorder. Both guards are comfortable, portable, and made just for you! If you or someone in your family needs to be fitted for a mouthguard, please call Union Dental Health today to schedule an appointment. It’s fast, easy, and affordable.

No one wants to experience a dental emergency, but sometimes life happens and you need help — fast. Rest assured that the team at Union Dental Health is going to be there for you. We never want to see our patients struggle in pain, so we do our best to get you into the office as soon as possible. From there your dentist will determine what treatment you’ll need and prioritize your care. We promise to do whatever it takes to accommodate you and restore health and function to your smile.

Sometimes it’s hard to know if you’re experiencing a dental emergency. Here is a list of some of the most common issues we see as your Lewisburg general dentist.

  • A knocked-out permanent or adult tooth
  • A badly cracked tooth with pain and swelling
  • A deep bite to the tongue or lip
  • An extremely painful toothache
  • Objects stuck in your mouth
  • An abscess or painful infection of the bone and gum
  • A deep cut to your gums
  • A fractured jaw
  • A lost filling or crown

If one of these situations has happened to you or someone in your family, please don’t hesitate to contact us right away. The earlier we are able to address your emergency, the better the chances of you making a full recovery for a healthy, whole smile.

Gentle General Dentistry For Your Body, Mind, and Spirit

We talk a lot about the connection between your mouth and body. The reason for doing so is the more you hear and learn about it, the more you’ll begin to understand how important it truly is. You see, to us, general dentistry is more about dental hygiene or having a cavity filled. We focus on you as a person, not just treating teeth. When your mouth is healthy, you will notice some of the added benefits of taking good care of your smile.

Having optimal oral health can:

  • Boost your confidence and self-esteem by getting rid of gum disease and decay that can lead to bad breath.
  • Help to lower your risk of developing heart disease or other health issues related to gum disease.
  • Keep your memory sharp as recent studies have found that adults with gum disease had lower success at completing cognitive/memory testing compared to disease-free patients.
  • Help to reduce your risks of inflammation and infection both in your mouth and elsewhere in your body.

It’s easy to see why it’s important to have regular dental checkups and visits with us.
